Carved out of rocks, the Lepakshi Temple is adorned with intricate carvings, murals, and beautifully sculpted pillars, a testament to the exceptional craftsmanship of the Vijayanagara artisans. According to history, the temple was constructed under the patronage of Virupanna, a royal officer, and his brother. Some legends also associate the temple with sage Agastya.
The temple is not only dedicated to Lord Veerbhadra but also houses shrines for Lord Vishnu and a self-manifested Shivalinga. Outside the temple complex stands a massive Nandi statue, carved from a single stone, which is among the largest in India.
The Hanging Pillar – A Mystery That Baffles All
The most talked-about feature of Lepakshi Temple is its mysterious hanging pillar. Out of nearly 70 pillars in the main hall, one hangs suspended above the ground, with a clear gap visible beneath it. Visitors often pass cloth or paper under the pillar to test this marvel, and it slides through effortlessly.
Local belief holds that touching or passing beneath this pillar brings good luck.
Even British engineers during colonial times attempted to study the phenomenon. To their surprise, they discovered that the entire weight of the temple rests on this pillar, yet it remains detached from the ground. Despite their scientific expertise, they failed to explain how ancient architects achieved this feat, leaving the mystery unsolved even today.
