National Lok Adalat on December 13: A Prime Opportunity to Settle Traffic Fines at Reduced Rates

Vehicle owners across India have a valuable chance to clear pending traffic challans as a National Lok Adalat is scheduled for December 13, 2025. This one-day event aims to help motorists resolve outstanding traffic violations efficiently, avoiding the long wait and legal complications that often accompany regular court proceedings. Thousands of compoundable traffic cases are expected to be addressed, allowing drivers to settle fines at reduced rates.

The initiative is designed to tackle the growing backlog of traffic challans and provide relief to motorists before penalties escalate or formal legal action is taken. Several states will participate in the Lok Adalat, where drivers can directly present eligible cases to dedicated benches handling minor traffic offences.

The Lok Adalat will focus on compoundable traffic violations, including:

  • Jumping traffic signals
  • Overspeeding (within compoundable limits)
  • Wrong or unauthorized parking
  • Missing Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificates
  • Number plate irregularities
  • Seatbelt or helmet violations
  • Other minor, non-serious offences

It is important to note that cases involving accidents, drunk driving, or non-compoundable offences will not be covered and will continue through regular court processes.

How Motorists Can Take Advantage of the Lok Adalat

Drivers looking to reduce fines should first verify if they have any pending challans. This can be done via the Parivahan e-Challan portal or the traffic police website of the respective state. Make sure to note the challan numbers and download or screenshot the details. Carrying a printout, along with the vehicle’s registration certificate (RC), driving licence, valid ID, and any prior official notices, is highly recommended.

On the day of the Lok Adalat, motorists need to visit the designated court or settlement centre with their documents. A conciliator will review the case to confirm eligibility for settlement.

Once approved, fines are reduced according to state-level guidelines, often by 30% to 75%, depending on the offence type and the date of issuance. The revised fine is then communicated to the driver, who can pay it immediately, either digitally or in cash, depending on available facilities. Upon payment, the conciliator issues a final settlement order, officially closing the case. This ensures the challan is cleared from records and avoids any future legal or administrative complications.

Why This Matters

The December 13 National Lok Adalat is anticipated to be one of the year’s largest traffic settlement drives. Authorities urge motorists with old or pending challans to take advantage of this opportunity. Delaying payment can lead to higher fines and stricter enforcement, especially as many states now link challan records with vehicle insurance, fitness certificates, and other official databases.
