Passengers on a civic transport service bus had a close call when it caught fire in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, on Thursday morning, according to police. The incident caused a traffic jam in the area for a while.

The bus, operated by the Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT), caught fire at Runwal Chowk in the Manpada area on Kalyan-Shilphata Road around 10:30 am, as reported by the police.

Upon realizing the danger, the driver quickly stopped the bus and urged the passengers to get off before he jumped to safety, a police official stated.

The police swiftly halted traffic on both sides of the road to avoid any further incidents.

With the assistance of a water tanker, police personnel managed to extinguish the fire within 30 minutes, as noted by Deputy Commissioner of Police, Traffic, Pankaj Shirsat.

Once the fire was contained, a crane was used to remove the burnt bus from the road, allowing traffic to resume, according to him.

“The traffic police on patrol safely evacuated the bus passengers, and the fire was put out. Traffic on the road has now returned to normal,” Shirsat mentioned.

“Extra measures were implemented to ensure the safety of vehicles carrying flammable materials passing through the area,” he added.

The bus passengers continued their travel in auto-rickshaws and private vehicles.
