Akansha Mavi, 28, tragically lost her life after a lift malfunction, just moments after giving birth.

A tragic incident unfolded at Capital Hospital in Meerut, where 28-year-old Akansha Mavi died shortly after giving birth due to a lift malfunction. The lift’s belt reportedly broke, trapping her neck and causing severe injuries. Despite frantic attempts by family members to assist her, hospital staff allegedly fled the scene. This incident has sparked outrage and demands for stricter safety measures in healthcare facilities.

The tragedy occurred moments after Akansha delivered a baby girl. According to SSP Meerut, Dr. Vipin Tada, she was being moved from the operation theatre to another room when the lift malfunctioned, leaving her neck stuck in the gates and causing a severe fracture. Her family’s pleas for help went unanswered as hospital staff, including doctors, abandoned the scene.

The police have filed an FIR under Section 105 of the Indian Penal Code for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The hospital owner, treating doctor, and staff have been named in the complaint for their failure to provide timely assistance.

Chief Medical Officer Dr. Ashok Kataria stated that maintenance records of the lift are under scrutiny. “If any negligence is found, strict action will be taken,” he affirmed. An hour after the incident, police arrived at the hospital and recovered Akansha’s body. She was rushed to another private hospital, where she was declared brought dead.

The tragedy led to a chaotic scene at the hospital. Family members, overwhelmed by grief and anger, vandalized hospital property. Other patients’ attendants also shifted 13 patients to different hospitals amidst the commotion.

Two hospital staff members were reportedly trapped in the lift during the incident but escaped with minor injuries. So far, no arrests have been made.

Akansha is survived by her husband, Ankush Mavi, an Army personnel, and her two daughters. Ankush shared his heartbreak, stating, “My elder daughter keeps asking for her mother. We have no answer for her.”

The incident has ignited public outrage, with demands for improved safety protocols in hospitals to prevent similar tragedies. Community members and patient advocates are calling for regular maintenance checks and better emergency procedures. “This should never happen to another family,” a local resident remarked.

Eyewitness accounts suggest the lift’s belt broke during operation, causing it to plummet and trap Akansha. Family members, who could hear her cries for help, alleged gross negligence on the hospital’s part. Despite their desperate efforts, Akansha was not rescued until it was too late, highlighting critical lapses in emergency response by the hospital staff.
