New Passport To Cost ₹2,500; Tatkal Fee Raised To ₹5,000 As Centre Revises Rates From July 1
The Central Government has announced a revision in passport and travel document fees, with the new rates set to come into effect from July 1, 2026, following a notification issued by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). The revised charges will apply to fresh passport applications, passport renewals, replacement of lost or damaged passports, Police Clearance Certificates (PCCs), and other related travel documents for applicants both in India and abroad.
The revised fee structure has been notified through the Passports (Amendment) Rules, 2026, issued by the MEA on June 20, 2026, under the provisions of Section 24 of the Passports Act, 1967. The amendment replaces Schedule IV of the Passports Rules, 1980, which outlines the fees payable for passport and travel document services.

The government has also revised the charges for several passport-related services. The fee for issuing a Police Clearance Certificate (PCC), Surrender Certificate, Global Entry Program verification, and other miscellaneous passport-based certificates has been fixed at ₹750 in India and USD 40 abroad.
For special travel documents:
- Emergency Certificate: USD 15 (issued abroad)
- Certificate of Identity: ₹1,000 in India and USD 50 abroad
The notification states that the Passports (Amendment) Rules, 2026 will come into force from July 1, 2026. The revised fee schedule will apply to all passport applications submitted on or after that date.
The amendment does not change passport validity. Adult passports will continue to remain valid for 10 years, while passports issued to minors will remain valid for five years or until the applicant turns 18, whichever is earlier.
The revised fee schedule marks the first major update to passport service charges under the Centre’s amended passport rules.
