Pune: A new species of scorpion has been discovered in the Pattan kodoli region near Kolhapur, within the Western Ghats. Detailed structural and genetic studies have confirmed that this species is distinct from others in its family.

The research was conducted by Dr. Omkar Yadav, Saurabh Kininge (MLA Shashikant Shinde College), Dr. Amrut Bhosale (Dahiwadi College), Devendra Bhosale (D.Y. Patil Technical Campus), Ashutosh Suryawanshi (Kolhapur), Mahesh Bandgar (Sangola), and Kranti Bandgar. Their findings have been published in the Journal of Bombay Natural History Society.

The newly discovered species belongs to the Isometrus family, known for inhabiting tree trunks. This species was found on coconut trees in Patankodoli by Mahesh Bandgar, Ashutosh Suryawanshi, and Devendra Bhosale. Under the guidance of Dr. Omkar Yadav, further studies on its structure and genetic composition confirmed its uniqueness. The species differs from others in the family due to its size, granular surface texture, distinctive tail features, and unique genetic makeup.

These scorpions are nocturnal and rest under tree bark during the day. Their color blends with tree trunks, making them difficult to spot. Researchers emphasize the need for conservation, as deforestation for development poses a threat to this species’ habitat.
