NHAI Brings Big Relief for FASTag Users: New KYV Rules, No Account Closures Without Notice
In a big relief for FASTag users, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has made important changes to the rules that make the system easier, safer, and more convenient for everyone. Now, banks will not be allowed to close or deactivate a user’s FASTag account without first informing them. The changes also include a simpler “Know Your Vehicle” (KYV) process so that users don’t have to struggle with unnecessary paperwork or confusing steps.
Banks Must Inform Before Closing FASTag Accounts
Until now, many customers faced issues when their FASTag accounts were suddenly closed by banks, sometimes without any notice. This caused delays and confusion at toll plazas. To solve this, NHAI has issued new guidelines that make it mandatory for banks to inform customers before disconnecting their FASTag accounts.
If a user faces any problem while uploading the required documents, the issuing bank must reach out and help them finish the KYC process. The aim is to ensure that no user’s FASTag is blocked without a fair chance to fix the issue.
What Is KYV (Know Your Vehicle)?
The KYV process is like a verification step that ensures every FASTag is correctly linked to the right vehicle. Users have to upload specific images and details to confirm that their FASTag tag is properly attached and being used correctly.
As per the new NHAI guidelines, completing the KYV will be easier than before. FASTag users will no longer have to upload side photos of their vehicles. Instead, they only need to submit one clear picture showing the front of the vehicle, with the number plate and the FASTag visible.
Automatic RC Details and Vehicle Selection
The new process also makes the technology smarter. When users enter details like the vehicle number, chassis number, or mobile number, the system will automatically fetch the registration certificate (RC) details from the government’s VAHAN database.
If someone owns multiple vehicles linked to the same mobile number, they can easily choose which vehicle they want to complete the KYV for. This new update saves time and effort, making the process user-friendly.
No Need to Replace FASTag Frequently
Another big relief is that FASTags will now remain valid for a long time. Previously, users had to change their tags often, which was inconvenient and costly. Under the new rules, FASTags already issued will stay active unless there are complaints about misuse or damaged tags.
This means users can keep using their existing tags without worrying about frequent replacements.
What to Do if You Face a Problem
If users have any trouble completing their KYV or uploading documents, they can reach out to their bank for help. Banks are required to assist and guide customers through the process instead of directly blocking their accounts.
Additionally, users can call the National Highway Helpline at 1033 for any issues or complaints related to FASTag or KYV.
Improving Customer Experience
According to NHAI and Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), these updates are designed to make the FASTag experience smoother for everyone. The goal is to improve transparency, reduce confusion, and make toll payments completely hassle-free.
Customers will also receive SMS reminders from their banks to complete their KYC process before any action is taken. This ensures no one is caught off guard or faces sudden service interruptions.
