Maharashtra Schools To Sing Full Vande Mataram Song From Oct 31 to Nov 7. Know why
Maharashtra Schools to Sing Full ‘Vande Mataram’ from Oct 31 to Nov 7 to Mark 150th Anniversary
Pune, October 31, 2025
The Maharashtra government has directed all schools across the state to sing the complete version of the national song Vande Mataram between October 31 and November 7, 2025, to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the iconic composition by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay.
As part of the week-long celebration, schools have also been instructed to organize exhibitions highlighting the history and significance of Vande Mataram, enabling students to understand its cultural and national importance.
The directive, however, has sparked political debate. Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Asim Azmi criticized the move, saying it was inappropriate to impose the singing of Vande Mataram on everyone, as it may conflict with certain religious beliefs. He remarked that while Islam holds deep respect for mothers, it does not permit bowing before them.
Without naming any political party, Azmi alleged that some groups focus on divisive issues rather than development. Responding to his statement, Maharashtra BJP media chief Navnath Ban said, “If Abu Azmi is allergic to Vande Mataram, he should move to another country. If he wishes to live here, he needs to respect and recite Vande Mataram.”
The initiative aims to foster patriotism and awareness among students while honoring a century and a half of India’s historic national song. Schools have been asked to ensure active participation and display materials related to the song’s legacy.
