Traveling between Mumbai and Pune is set to become significantly faster. Currently, the journey takes around four hours, often longer due to heavy traffic on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. However, Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has announced plans for a new highway that will reduce this travel time to just 1.5 hours.

Speaking at an event marking the birth anniversary of Dr. Nanasaheb Parulekar, Gadkari shared details about the new project. He explained that the original expressway was built using the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model due to budget constraints at the time. However, with traffic congestion worsening, he decided it was necessary to construct a new road.

The new highway will connect the Aatal Setu to Pune’s ring road and extend all the way to Bengaluru. The government has allocated a budget of ₹45,000 crore for this project, which is set to begin within a month.

Gadkari emphasized that this initiative aims to alleviate the burden on the existing Mumbai-Pune Expressway, which was already under strain from high traffic volumes. The first phase of the construction will start soon, and once completed, the new route will enable travelers to reach Pune from Mumbai in just 1.5 hours.

This development is expected to greatly improve connectivity between the two cities and support regional growth.
