One Bag Limit, Maximum Weight 7kg: Updated Hand Luggage Regulations for Air Travel
If someone is planning to fly, it’s important to understand the new hand baggage policy set by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) before arriving at the airport. Not being aware of these rules could lead to unnecessary issues upon arrival.
With the rise in passenger numbers at pre-embarkation security checkpoints, BCAS and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), which oversees airport security, have tightened regulations regarding the new hand baggage policy. This stricter enforcement by BCAS and CISF has led airlines to adopt similar measures.
According to the new BCAS hand baggage policy, passengers are now allowed only one piece of hand baggage weighing up to 7 kg on board the aircraft. This rule applies to both domestic and international flights, meaning that any additional baggage must be checked in.
Air India allows passengers in economy or premium economy class to carry one hand baggage weighing up to 7 kg, while first or business-class travelers can bring up to 10 kg. The maximum dimensions for hand baggage should not exceed 55 cm in height, 40 cm in length, and 20 cm in width.
For tickets booked before May 2, 2024, there are exemptions: economy passengers can bring 8 kg, premium economy passengers can bring 10 kg, and first or business class passengers can bring 12 kg. It’s important to remember that this exemption only applies to tickets booked before that date, and any changes made after will follow the new baggage policy.
Indigo Airlines allows passengers to bring one cabin bag that can be a maximum of 115 cm in size and weigh up to 7 kg. Additionally, travelers can carry a personal item, like a purse or a small laptop bag, with a weight limit of 3 kg.
