In a tragic incident that shocked Saharanpur, a local jeweler named Saurabh Babbar, overwhelmed by crippling debt, took his own life along with his wife Mona. The couple’s tragic end unfolded on August 10, 2024, in Haridwar, where they jumped into the Ganga River.

Saurabh Babbar, the proprietor of Sai Jewelers in Kishanpura, was reportedly struggling under a debt burden of 10 crores. The mounting pressure from creditors appears to have driven him to this desperate measure. Before making the fatal leap, Saurabh took a selfie with Mona, which he sent to friends via WhatsApp. Alongside the selfie, he left a poignant note outlining their grim decision and the reasons behind it.

In his note, Saurabh expressed the couple’s inability to cope with the high interest rates imposed by their creditors. He lamented that despite their best efforts, they could no longer meet their financial obligations. The note also revealed that they had entrusted their two children to their grandmother’s care before departing.

Saurabh and Mona traveled to Haridwar on a newly purchased bike, a final journey marked by despair. The couple leaped into the Ganga River from the Bahadrabad Ganga Canal. Saurabh’s body was discovered at Har Ki Pauri the following morning. Efforts are ongoing to locate Mona, who remains missing.

The incident has left the community in shock. Saurabh, known locally as “Gold Committee,” had been a prominent figure in the jewelry trade, and his death has cast a pall over the town. The suicide note and a final video call, which has since circulated on social media, have further highlighted the couple’s dire situation. In the video, Saurabh poignantly declared their intentions, underscoring the deep financial despair that drove them to their tragic end.
