Following the review of the suspended permits, the district administration has allowed the reopening of 44 establishments whose licenses were earlier suspended. However, Pune Police still have concerns about many dance floors and pubs and have issued show cause notices to over a dozen pubs, which is seen as the first step towards cancellation of their licenses.

According to information from the State Excise department’s Pune office, the department had shut down 81 pubs and bars following a Porsche car accident case.

The superintendent of the State Excise Department Pune, CB Rajput, stated that all establishments with FL 3 permits include pubs, restaurants, bars, and hotels.

“We had shut down 81 such establishments, which included bars and pubs. Out of those, 44 are now operational, while the FL 3 permit licenses for 20 establishments have been permanently canceled. The hearings for six pubs and bars are still ongoing. The establishments that had fine-dining arrangements and were not booked under the MRTP Act were allowed to reopen after paying fines, whereas those facing cases under the MRTP Act have been closed,” he explained.

The Pune excise department has ramped up its crackdown on illegal pubs and bars throughout the city. Between April and May 2024, they investigated 108 establishments and took action against 57 of them.

Recently, Pune police issued a show-cause notice to Ballr Pub in Kalyaninagar due to security issues and overcrowding, suggesting that their license should be canceled for violating regulations.

The notice, dated August 9, highlighted that situations like fires or stampedes could lead to property damage and loss of life. It stated, “No concrete security arrangements are made here, and the place is also overcrowded. Currently, there is a terror alert, and it cannot be denied that a particular terror organization could use the crowd to carry out a bomb blast, potentially resulting in many casualties.”
