Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir – In a tragic turn of events, at least 26 people are feared dead and over 20 others injured after terrorists opened fire at a group of tourists near the scenic town of Pahalgam in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Tuesday afternoon.

According to local sources, the attack took place around 2:30 PM at Baisaran, a popular meadow in Pahalgam. Eyewitness accounts reveal that two to three terrorists arrived at the location, began checking identity cards, and soon after, opened indiscriminate fire, reportedly firing over 50 rounds. Among the deceased are 25 tourists and one local resident.

An Army officer, who was present at the site with his family, is said to have played a key role in shielding other civilians amid the chaos.

High-Level Response from Centre and Security Forces

The gravity of the situation prompted swift action from top government and security officials. Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired an emergency meeting in Delhi with senior officials from the Army and intelligence agencies, followed by his departure to Srinagar for an on-ground assessment. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also spoken with Amit Shah to monitor developments closely.

Massive Counter-Terror Operation Underway

A coordinated counter-terror operation has been launched to track down and neutralize the terrorists responsible for the attack. The Indian Army’s Victor Force and Special Forces, the Special Operations Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police, and the CRPF are jointly conducting the operation in and around Pahalgam.

Senior police and Army officers are currently stationed in Anantnag to oversee the security situation and support rescue and recovery efforts.
