Parking Problems Persist In Pune as PMC’s Pay-And-Park Project Remains On Hold

The Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) 2018 plan to introduce pay-and-park zones on major roads has stalled, leaving drivers struggling to find parking spaces. Despite identifying zones and fixing hourly rates, the project remains in limbo. To address the city’s growing parking woes, the PMC had envisioned three zones – low traffic (A), medium traffic (B), and high traffic (C) – with corresponding hourly rates. Four-wheelers would be charged ₹10-20 per hour, while two-wheelers would pay ₹2-5 per hour.

Designated pay-and-park roads include Namdar Gopalkrishna Gokhale Road, North Main Road (Lane 5, 6, 7), Aundh DP Road and adjoining areas, Balewadi High Street, and Vimannagar. However, the project never took off.

A committee formed under the then Mayor to oversee the project failed to hold a single meeting. Officials’ lack of response stalled progress, and the 2019 assembly elections and COVID-19 pandemic provided convenient excuses for delay.

The local body’s inaction prompted the Urban Development Department to inquire about the status. In response, the PMC wrote to the Principal Secretary on July 15, citing the need for government approval as per parking policy.

“The PMC’s inaction has led to parking chaos,” a local resident said. “We urge the authorities to revive the pay-and-park plan and provide relief to drivers.” The PMC must prioritize the project, address bureaucratic hurdles, and implement the pay-and-park system to alleviate parking woes.

The delay has raised questions about the PMC’s commitment to solving the city’s parking problems. Will the PMC finally take action, or will drivers continue to suffer ?
