Pimpri-Chinchwad, Pune, May 20: Medical shop owners across Pimpri-Chinchwad city joined the indefinite nationwide strike called by the All India Chemists and Druggists Association (AICDA) against online medicine sales on Tuesday. The protest witnessed enthusiastic participation from local chemists and druggists across the city.

The main wholesale medicine market in Chinchwad remained shut, while nearly 2,500 medical stores across Pimpri-Chinchwad also stayed closed in support of the bandh. Office bearers and members of the Chemists and Druggists Association participated in the protest by wearing black ribbons on their arms.

To avoid inconvenience to patients, medical stores operating inside some major hospitals were exempted from the strike and continued their services.

The association alleged that online medicine sales are completely illegal and claimed that such platforms are also being misused to supply medicines for substance abuse. The Pimpri-Chinchwad Chemists and Druggists Association has demanded that the Central Government immediately bring in strict legislation to stop the online sale of medicines.

Santosh Ware of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Chemists and Druggists Association said the protest was aimed at safeguarding public health and protecting the interests of licensed medical retailers.
