On August 19, 2024, a Super Specialty Hospital in Pimpri, Pune, witnessed a touching display of sisterly affection when a 36-year-old woman marked Raksha Bandhan by donating her kidney to her younger brother. The 34-year-old patient had been experiencing chronic cold and cough, which resulted in his hospitalization.

After a detailed examination by Dr. Vrishali Patil, the Head of the Multi-Organ Transplant Surgery Department, it was determined that he was suffering from end-stage renal disease and needed regular hemodialysis. His health had worsened, leading to cardiopulmonary issues that presented as chronic cough, cold, and severe breathlessness.

After a thorough evaluation, the doctors at the hospital concluded that a kidney transplant was the most appropriate solution. Initially, the patient’s mother offered to donate a kidney, but she was found to be medically unfit for the procedure. Following this, his sister volunteered and was considered a suitable donor after extensive medical evaluations and counseling. The transplant surgery was successfully performed on August 8, 2024, and lasted six hours.

Both siblings recovered without any complications, with the brother now free from hemodialysis and able to walk for an hour without experiencing breathlessness. The surgery represented a significant achievement for the hospital, leaving both the family and the medical staff profoundly touched by the success of the operation.
