The suspension comes after a stampede incident at Mumbai’s Bandra station last Sunday, which resulted in injuries to 10 people. The accident raised concerns over platform safety during busy travel periods. In response, Northern Railways has halted platform ticket sales at New Delhi and Anand Vihar stations.

The Central Railway has taken similar steps across several key stations in Mumbai and Pune, including:

• Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT)

• Dadar

• Lokmanya Tilak Terminus

• Thane

• Kalyan

• Nagpur

Railway officials highlighted that the sale of platform tickets often leads to unnecessary crowding, as some individuals use them to loiter on platforms without a genuine need to travel. The Public Relations Officer for the Pune rail division, noted:

“This increased platform traffic creates problems for passengers and poses potential safety risks during peak travel times.”

To ensure a secure travel experience, railway staff are closely monitoring stations to identify individuals who may be violating the new restrictions.

Exemptions & Guidelines for Travelers

Special considerations are in place for senior citizens and those with medical needs, who will be exempt from the platform ticket restrictions. Authorities are urging travelers to adhere to the guidelines and plan their arrival times carefully to help maintain a safe environment during the festive period.

With special Diwali trains already operating, cities like Pune are experiencing an uptick in rail traffic. The authorities’ swift actions are a precautionary step to manage crowds effectively, aiming to prevent any incidents similar to the Bandra stampede.

Passengers are encouraged to comply with the temporary measures for a safer, hassle-free journey during this festive season.
