Anirudha Pavaskar, Head Water department, PMC said that notices are basically to create awareness and also to reduce wasteful expenditure of water.

The Pune Municipal Corporation has been surveying housing societies in the city for the last 10 days and has found that 4600 societies have been using more than the prescribed amount per unit. So far, PMC’s water department has served notice to 2500 member societies for overusing water.

According to PMC, on an average, one family needs 150 litres of water, but it has been found water is being overused.

“After installing automatic water meters in the city, it has come to our notice from the readings that there is excessive use of water. Readings reveal that people are using more than 10 percent of the average water usage. The city needs around 1600 MLD of water per day but excess water is used for washing cars, courtyards etc. This is treated water meant for people’s use. We have been doing a survey in the one lakh households where we have installed the water metres. This is out of the 3 lakh and18 thousand metres in the city, ” said Anirudha Pavaskar, Head Water department, PMC.

The PMC spends around Rs 2100 crores for water supply in the city.

Pavaskar also added, “Excess water usage has been found in old societies, where old storage tanks have leakages or are not using ball cork to prevent water from overflowing. These societies have been sent notices. The notices are basically to create awareness and also to reduce wasteful expenditure of water. We are not threatening people but want people to be aware of how much water is wasted.”

If the societies or individuals do not mend their ways then PMC plans to impose a fine.
