The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) Commissioner Vikram Kumar has put forth a significant proposal aimed at assisting the migrant population of Pune City.

During the presentation of the civic budget for 2024-25 which was announced on 7th March 2024, Kumar highlighted the pressing issue faced by citizens who migrate to Pune for job opportunities and education but struggle to afford rental properties. To tackle this issue, the civic body intends to initiate a rental housing scheme starting from the Baner area of Pune City.

While the specific details of the entire scheme are yet to be finalised, Kumar emphasized that certain terms and conditions, such as Income criteria would be integral aspects of this upcoming initiative. The PMC plans to utilize flats constructed under Prime Minister Awas Yojana and other slum rehabilitation schemes for this initiative. According to Prime Minister Awas Yojana(PMAY), it aims to provide a pucca house to all eligible urban households by 2022 to address the lack of urban housing among the EWS/LIG and MIG categories, which includes those living in slums.

The Union Cabinet has decided to extend PMAY(U) till 31 December 2024.Kumar further mentioned that the PMC is receiving grants from the central government government to develop town Planning schemes in the city.

This will further support the rental housing initiative. Moreover, the proposed scheme aims to provide affordable housing options for migrants, ensuring better accessibility to accommodation in Pune, thereby addressing a crucial need in Pune City’s housing sector.
