Police Inspector Dies, 12–13 Injured After Swing Collapses at Surajkund Crafts Mela in Faridabad
Faridabad, Haryana | February 7:
A tragic accident struck the 39th Surajkund International Crafts Mela on Saturday evening after a popular amusement ride collapsed, killing a police inspector and injuring at least 12 to 13 people.
The incident occurred between 6 pm and 7 pm when the “Tsunami” swing, carrying around 15 riders, reportedly malfunctioned due to a suspected mechanical failure. Eyewitnesses said the ride suddenly tilted before crashing to the ground, throwing passengers off and causing panic across the crowded fairground.
Amid the chaos, Police Inspector Jagdish Prasad, who was deployed on security duty at the mela and originally posted in Palwal, rushed to help rescue those trapped and injured. During the rescue effort, a part of the collapsing structure struck him on the head, leaving him critically injured.
He was immediately taken to Badshah Khan Civil Hospital, where doctors declared him dead during treatment.
Several injured visitors were also rushed to nearby hospitals, where some are said to be in serious condition. Emergency services and police teams quickly reached the spot, cordoned off the area, and suspended operations of nearby rides.
Authorities have ordered a probe into the incident to determine the exact cause of the collapse. Initial findings point towards a technical or mechanical fault. The amusement ride operator is being questioned, and safety checks of all rides at the mela have been intensified.
The incident has cast a shadow over the internationally renowned crafts fair, prompting fresh concerns over public safety and maintenance standards at large public events.
