Pune: Despite a population nearing three million, vehicle owners in Pimpri-Chinchwad remain largely indifferent to installing High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP). A survey by Pune Times Mirror found that only 26,363 plates have been fitted so far.

The Central government has mandated HSRP for all vehicles, as these tamper-proof plates are linked to a digital database, aiding vehicle tracking in case of theft. Vehicles registered before April 1, 2019, must install HSRP by March 31, 2025. In Maharashtra, three agencies have been designated for installation, with fixed charges: Rs 450 for two-wheelers and tractors, Rs 500 for three-wheelers, and Rs 750 for four-wheelers.

On December 23, 2024, Regional Transport Officers (RTOs) and Deputy RTOs across Maharashtra were directed to oversee the HSRP installation process. The state has been divided into three RTO zones, managing 12, 16, and 27 offices, respectively.

Initially, vehicle owners who failed to comply were to face penalties under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. However, due to the low installation numbers, the Maharashtra government has extended the deadline to June 30, 2025.

1.55 Lakh Online Applications

The Pimpri-Chinchwad RTO has set up an official website for HSRP applications, with 1,55,156 vehicle owners having applied so far. Installation is being carried out at 41 designated centres across the city.

The Maharashtra Transport Commissionerate has clarified that HSRP installation is only permitted at authorised centres, and no provisions exist for home delivery. Vehicle owners must visit official centres to get their plates fitted.

Awareness Campaign Launched

To encourage more installations, RTOs have been instructed to run awareness campaigns. Meetings with vehicle dealers, auto-rickshaws, taxis, buses, and truck associations are being held to spread information about HSRP.

“Vehicle owners should register only through the Maharashtra Transport Department’s official website to avoid fraud,” said Rahul Jadhav, Deputy Regional Transport Officer, Pimpri-Chinchwad.
