Preparations For Census 2027 Begin In Pune District
Pune, March 16, 2026: In preparation for Census 2027, all concerned departments in Pune district have been instructed to complete necessary arrangements and undertake public awareness initiatives. The directive was issued by Resident Deputy District Collector Jyoti Kadam.
She was speaking at a review meeting held at the District Collector’s office regarding the upcoming house listing and housing census scheduled between May 16 and June 15. The meeting was attended by officials from primary and secondary education departments, the district health office, representatives from both municipal corporations in Pune, and other officers.
Officials highlighted that the census is a constitutional and legal exercise conducted under Article 246 (Union List) of the Constitution and the Census Act of 1948. Census 2027 will be the 16th census since 1872 and the 8th after India’s independence. Enumerators and supervisors will play a crucial role in collecting accurate data from households.
The data gathered through the census is vital for government planning, effective implementation of welfare schemes, equitable resource allocation, and the delimitation of constituencies. Citizens have been urged to actively participate and provide accurate information.
The Census 2027 exercise will be conducted in two phases. The first phase, to be carried out in 2026, will focus on house listing and housing census, collecting details about housing conditions, amenities, and assets to build a framework for population enumeration. The second phase, scheduled for 2027, will involve population enumeration, where individual data will be recorded based on a fixed reference date and time.
A major technological upgrade has been introduced this time, with data collection to be conducted digitally through the “Census 2027–HLO” mobile application. Additionally, for the first time, a self-enumeration facility will be available, allowing citizens to submit their information independently, which will later be verified by enumerators.
Jyoti Kadam also emphasized the need for all departments to ensure proper coordination, manpower planning, training, and awareness campaigns for the smooth execution of the census process.
