‘Proof Of Failure’: Rahul Gandhi Slams PM Modi’s ‘Don’t Buy Gold For A Year, Work From Home’ Appeal
Rahul Gandhi criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi after the PM urged citizens to reduce fuel use, postpone gold purchases and avoid unnecessary foreign travel amid concerns over rising global energy prices and pressure on foreign exchange reserves.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his recent public appeal asking citizens to adopt austerity measures in view of the ongoing global energy crisis and pressure on India’s foreign exchange reserves.

Addressing a rally in Hyderabad, PM Modi had urged people to reduce petrol and diesel consumption, use metro services, carpool, shift to electric vehicles and work from home wherever possible. He also advised citizens to postpone gold purchases and foreign travel for one year and reduce the use of edible oil and chemical fertilisers.
The Prime Minister said the measures were necessary to save foreign exchange reserves as rising tensions and conflict in West Asia had pushed up global crude oil and fertiliser prices, impacting supply chains and increasing economic pressure.
Drawing parallels with behavioural changes adopted during the Covid-19 pandemic, PM Modi said people had already become familiar with work-from-home systems, virtual meetings and reduced travel, and suggested that such practices could again help reduce fuel consumption.

Reacting strongly to the remarks, Rahul Gandhi termed the appeal “proof of failure” and accused the government of shifting responsibility onto the public instead of addressing the economic situation directly.

In a post on social media platform X, Rahul Gandhi said, “Yesterday, Modi ji asked the public to make sacrifices, don’t buy gold, don’t go abroad, use less petrol, cut down on fertiliser and cooking oil, take the metro, work from home. These aren’t sermons, they’re proof of failure.”
The Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha further alleged that after over a decade in power, the government was now asking citizens what to buy, where to travel and how to live because it had failed to manage the situation effectively.
He also claimed that the burden of economic challenges was repeatedly being shifted onto ordinary citizens while the government avoided accountability.
The remarks have triggered political debate at a time when concerns are growing over rising fuel prices, inflationary pressure and the impact of global geopolitical tensions on India’s economy.
The Prime Minister had framed the suggested measures as a temporary national effort during a difficult global phase, while opposition parties have questioned whether such appeals reflect deeper economic stress.
