22 August 2024
Public Holiday: August is packed with holidays. This month, public holidays are set for the 25th and 26th. All government and private offices, banks, and schools will be closed during this time. Here’s the reason for these holidays.
Public holiday on 25th and 26th
The 25th of August falls on a Sunday, which means schools and offices will be closed. The 26th is Janmashtami, a festival that also warrants a public holiday. This year, with Saturday and Sunday followed by Janmashtami on Monday, people are enjoying an extended break.
Why is Janmashtami celebrated?
Krishna Janmashtami marks the birth of Lord Krishna, who is regarded as the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu and is revered across India. According to tradition, he was born in a prison cell in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, at midnight. Therefore, the Janmashtami Puja is conducted during Nishita Kaal, which is around midnight. This year, Janmashtami will be celebrated on the 26th of August.
