Pune, February 9, 2026: A man was allegedly cheated of ₹11.61 lakh after being falsely promised a tree plantation contract with the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), police officials said on Sunday.

According to the police, the fraud took place between April and September 2024 at multiple locations, including the complainant’s residence in Bhosari. The accused reportedly convinced the victim that he could facilitate the allotment of a PCMC tree plantation tender.

Based on the complaint, the accused, identified as Abhijit Gaikwad, approached Sandesh Land and assured him of securing the contract. Trusting these claims, the complainant transferred money to the accused on several occasions through both cash payments and online transactions.

Investigators stated that the accused collected a total of ₹17.49 lakh, of which ₹5.88 lakh was later returned. The remaining ₹11.61 lakh was allegedly retained by the accused. To strengthen his claims, Gaikwad is said to have shown the complainant forged documents, falsely indicating that the tender had been approved.

The complainant later discovered that the documents were fabricated and that no such tender had been awarded by the PCMC. Despite repeated follow-ups, the accused allegedly failed to refund the remaining amount, prompting the victim to approach the police.

A case was registered at Bhosari police station on February 7 under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police said further investigation is in progress.
