Pune | January 27, 2026: A disturbing new dimension has emerged in the Uruli Kanchan dowry death case, where a young married woman, an engineer by profession, allegedly ended her life following sustained harassment by her in-laws. The incident has sent shockwaves across the area, especially as the victim’s mother-in-law is a sitting village sarpanch and her father-in-law a schoolteacher.
The deceased had completed her engineering education. According to police and the complaint filed by her father, Dipti initially led a stable married life after her wedding in 2019. However, her situation reportedly deteriorated over the years due to escalating demands and mental harassment at her marital home.
In his statement to the police, Dipti’s father said he sensed something was wrong when his daughter appeared deeply distressed and suddenly broke down during a conversation. When he gently questioned her, Dipti allegedly revealed a traumatic ordeal, claiming she was forced to undergo an abortion against her will.
As per the complaint, Dipti already had a daughter. During her second pregnancy, her husband and mother-in-law allegedly pressured her to undergo medical tests. When it was revealed that the unborn child was also a girl, Dipti claimed her mother-in-law compelled her to terminate the pregnancy. She also alleged that she was warned not to disclose these events to her parental family.
The father further stated that Dipti told him she was repeatedly taunted and threatened, with remarks suggesting that the family wanted a male heir to “carry forward the lineage.” She was allegedly told to leave the house if she refused to comply with their demands.
In addition to this, the complaint mentions persistent dowry harassment. Despite receiving substantial dowry at the time of marriage, including 50 tolas of gold, Dipti was allegedly pressured to bring more money for purchasing a car. Her family claimed they had already paid ₹10 lakh in cash and later an additional ₹25 lakh to meet these demands, yet the harassment continued.
Police have arrested Dipti’s husband and mother-in-law in connection with the case. A detailed investigation is underway to examine allegations of dowry harassment, forced abortion, and abetment to suicide.
The case has once again raised serious concerns over dowry-related violence and the continued preference for male children, despite strict laws and widespread awareness campaigns.
