Pune | June 7, 2025 — Advocates Asim Sarode and Shriya Awale have raised objections to the State Election Commission’s (SEC) decision to reuse voter lists from the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections for the upcoming local body elections.

Speaking at a press conference, Sarode called the move unconstitutional and misleading. “Maintaining the same voter lists, which were changed in such an opaque manner, is a fraud on honest citizens and a betrayal of the Constitution,” he said.

The SEC had proposed using the same voter data from last year’s assembly elections, despite ongoing legal challenges. “Over 100 out of 288 assembly constituencies are facing election petitions in the High Court,” Sarode added, calling the situation unprecedented.

Shriya Awale pointed out a major discrepancy in voter registration figures. “In 2024, the voter count was 9.73 crore, which later increased to 9.80 crore. If the outdated list is reused, nearly 7 lakh new voters will be denied their right to vote,” she stated.

The advocates also alleged that election officials were instructed to bypass mandatory procedures under the Voters Registration Rules, 1960, compromising transparency and fairness in the electoral process.

They urged the authorities to prepare updated and legally compliant voter lists before the local body elections.
