The Pune airport achieved a milestone on Sunday, recording the highest-ever number of flight movements in a single day. The airport witnessed 204 flight movements, comprising 102 departures and 102 arrivals, surpassing the previous record.

This achievement comes a week after the airport authorities urged airlines to utilize their allocated slots or surrender them. The move appears to have paid off, with the airport experiencing a significant rise in flight movements.

Sundays typically witness heavy movements, ranging between 192 and 198. However, this Sunday’s numbers exceeded expectations, marking a new high for the airport.

The increased flight movements are attributed to airlines making better use of their allocated slots. Airport officials expressed hope that this trend would continue, with more flights expected to commence operations in the coming weeks.

Currently, 10 of the 216 slots assigned to the airport remain empty, primarily consisting of red-eye slots. Airport officials expressed optimism that these slots would be taken up by airlines, catering to the growing demand for late-night and early-morning flights.

The airport’s expansion plans are also underway, with work on dismantling airline counters and other structures at the old terminal building set to begin by the end of the month. A new road connecting to the new terminal building, along with gardens, is also in the pipeline.
