Ajit Pawar, the opposition leader in the Maharashtra State, recently expressed the Nationalist Congress Party’s (NCP) interest in contesting the vacant Pune Lok Sabha constituency. The seat became vacant following the unfortunate demise of MP Girish Bapat. Pawar emphasized that the NCP holds a strong position in Pune and believes that the seat should be allocated to his party. However, his statement has caused unease within the city’s Congress party.

During his visit to Pune, Ajit Pawar, the Leader of the Opposition, addressed reporters and stated, “The Lok Sabha elections are still a year away, and it was assumed that there would be no by-election for Pune. However, as per information received a by-election will take place soon. Taking in view the strength of the NCP in Pune, we are ready to contest the Pune seat. Looking at the current situation, the NCP holds more strength compared to other coalition parties. We had 40 corporators in the municipal corporation, while our allied party had ten corporators. In addition, to the large number of presence in Corporation, we have two MLAs in the city. As per my opinion, party showing greater strength should be given in the opportunity. Seeking experience from the previous elections of local bodies and assembly elections, it shows that we have greater strength.”

Meanwhile, the Congress party has expressed its intention to contest the Pune Lok Sabha seat.

In response to Congress’s claim, Ajit Pawar stated, “Each one of us have got a right to voice opinion and make claims too. My best wishes to them.”
