The Pune-Mumbai Expressway has initiated the implementation of the Highway Traffic Management System (HTMS) with the aim of regulating vehicle speed and improving safety. The ongoing works are projected to be completed by September, providing better control over vehicle speeds on this busy highway.

As part of this comprehensive project, a total of 370 CCTV cameras will be strategically installed at 93 locations along the entire route. These cameras will enable efficient monitoring and facilitate prompt action against lane violations and reckless driving.

The decision by the Maharashtra state government to introduce the HTMS system stems from the pressing need to address the increasing number of accidents caused by excessive speed on expressways. The system will employ checkpoints placed at regular intervals of approximately four kilometers to monitor and enforce speed limits. Special measures will also be implemented to tackle challenges posed by bends, inclines, waterfalls, and other scenic spots that often lead to vehicles stopping on the roadside. Unplanned stops have resulted in traffic congestion and heightened accident risks. To combat this issue, the IRB company has proposed the establishment of designated stopping points along the highway. The proposal is currently awaiting approval from the state government and, upon approval, will be incorporated into the infrastructure project.

The work for installing the cameras is for the HTMS system in accordance with the state government’s directive to enhance traffic safety on the Pune-Mumbai highway. CCTV cameras and speed monitoring devices are being installed at regular intervals, and 40 percent of the work is completed. The aim is to finish the work by September 1. The implementation of the HTMS system and the installation of CCTV cameras along the Pune-Mumbai Expressway mark significant strides in enhancing traffic management and safety. By effectively controlling vehicle speed and promptly addressing lane violations, these measures aim to reduce accidents and ensure a smoother flow of traffic.
