Pune Authorities Demolish Hundreds of Illegal Resorts and Hotels Near Khadakwasla, Panshet and Pavana Dams
Authorities in Pune have demolished more than 300 illegal resorts, hotels, and other commercial structures around the catchment areas of Khadakwasla, Panshet, Pavana, and Kasarsai dams, in a major effort to safeguard the city’s drinking and irrigation water. The Water Resources Department, assisted by the Pune Municipal Corporation, has been carrying out this intensive demolition drive over the past week.
Khadakwasla, Varasgaon, Panshet, Pavana, and Kasarsai reservoirs are critical sources of water for Pune. Over time, private individuals and businesses encroached on government-owned land near these dams, constructing resorts and hotels that threatened the safety and quality of the water supply. Growing public complaints and repeated discussions in the state legislature prompted Water Resources Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil to order strict action against these illegal structures.
District Collector Jitendra Dudi confirmed that the operation is ongoing, with heavy machinery deployed by municipal teams and police ensuring security throughout the process. Officials reported that some encroachers tried to obstruct the drive through threats, legal challenges, and pressure tactics, but the authorities continued the demolition without interruption. Officials emphasized that the crackdown is a significant step toward preserving Pune’s water resources for the long term, ensuring safe drinking water and sustainable irrigation.
