Pune: Veteran labor leader Dr. Baba Adhav concluded his hunger strike on Saturday after drinking water offered by Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray. The protest, held at the historic Mahatma Phule Wada, coincided with the death anniversary of social reformer Mahatma Phule.

Dr. Adhav, aged 94, began the hunger strike to raise concerns about the alleged erosion of democratic values and increasing corruption in elections. He criticized the announcement of government schemes aimed at distributing money during election periods, terming it a blatant form of bribery. “This level of corruption is unprecedented,” he remarked, questioning the inaction of the Election Commission despite significant cash seizures during the election process.

The protest garnered political support, with leaders like Jayant Patil from the Sharad Pawar faction of the NCP joining Thackeray at the event. Dr. Adhav, a former Pune municipal councilor and a lifelong advocate for labor rights and social justice, continues to be a significant voice in India’s democratic and reformist movements.

Adhav also highlighted concerns over the discrepancies in election results and the alleged manipulation of the voting process. His hunger strike was a symbolic call to safeguard the Constitution and uphold democratic integrity.
