The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) organised a river cleaning campaign on Friday, 26 April at the riverbed near Baba Bhide bridge. The campaign was part of the ‘Majhi Vasundhara Mission’ under the banner of ‘Swacch Bharat Abhiyan’, which has been going on since 2022.

This campaign aims to spread awareness and knowledge about pollution caused by plastic and e-waste. This will encourage people to take a step against single-use plastic, e-waste and other harmful substances found in river bodies. Almost 250 participants contributed to the clean-up drive and helped in making the river free from around 370 kilograms of dry waste. The waste collected was treated and disposed of in an environment-friendly manner, following all safety protocols and guidelines.

Prithviraj BP, the Municipal Commissioner, addressed the gathering of 250 people who contributed to the cleaning drive. He appealed to them to choose and follow more environmentally-friendly habits and practices in their daily life such as saying no to single-use plastic bags. One of the initiatives taken up by the drive was to distribute cloth bags to people and discourage the use of single-use plastic bags.

The drive was joined by officials from the Shivaji Nagar-Ghole Road and Kasba Vishrambaug Wada region along with a member of the Adar Poonawala Cleanliness Initiative, which aims at improving the environment and waste management in the city of Pune.
