Pune: CBI Arrests Two MES Officials Over ₹2 Lakh Bribe Allegation
Pune, February 7, 2026: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested two officers of the Military Engineering Services (MES) in Pune for allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹2 lakh in connection with the clearance of payments to a private contractor.
The arrested officials have been identified as Sunil Nikam, Assistant Garrison Engineer, MES Khadki, and Suresh Mhaske, Junior Engineer, MES Khadki. According to the CBI, the arrests were made on Thursday following a trap operation.
During the operation, the junior engineer was allegedly caught red-handed while accepting the bribe amount from a representative of the contractor, who holds power of attorney for the firm executing MES projects. The cash was recovered from the accused’s office premises. The assistant garrison engineer was later taken into custody for his alleged involvement in the conspiracy.
Subsequent searches at the residential and official premises of both accused led to the recovery of documents and suspected unaccounted cash amounting to ₹1.88 lakh, officials said.
The CBI registered the case after receiving a complaint alleging that the two officers had demanded ₹6 lakh as illegal gratification for releasing pending bills. Despite completion of the contracted work and submission of the necessary completion certificates, payments were allegedly withheld to pressure the contractor into paying the bribe.
Investigators said that after negotiations, the officials reportedly agreed to accept ₹2 lakh as the first instalment, following which the trap was laid and the arrests were made.
