Pune: Citizens Raise Ecological Concerns Over Mula Riverfront Project On Wakad–Sangvi Stretch
Pune, February 6, 2026: On Thursday, 5 February, concerned citizens met with officials and consultants from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) to discuss grievances and concerns related to the proposed Riverfront Development (RFD) project along the Mula River, particularly the Wakad–Sangvi stretch. The HCP consultant team was also part of the discussion.
The meeting focused on identifying and safeguarding ecologically sensitive riparian zones along this stretch of the river.
Citizens highlighted the ecological importance of these zones, including their role in groundwater recharge, biodiversity conservation, and the long-term health of the river ecosystem. They stressed the urgent need to protect forests and the natural habitats of birds and turtles.
Officials acknowledged the concerns raised and recognised the importance of conserving the river’s rich natural habitats while planning riverfront development. They expressed their willingness to explore options for conserving such ecologically sensitive areas and showed openness to continued engagement with concerned citizens and experts who have consistently advocated for the protection of the Mula River’s riparian ecosystems.
The meeting underlined the need for a collaborative approach that balances public access with ecological integrity in riverfront planning.
The meeting was attended by PCMC Chief Engineer Sanjay Kulkarni, JICA engineers, HCP consultants, and experts and concerned citizens including Shailaja Deshpande, Ajay Phatak, Hrishikesh Tapshalkar, Shubham Pande, Prachi Chopade, and Prajakta Mahajan.
