Pune Civic Body Suspends Two Engineers After STP Failure Pollutes Pashan Lake, Triggers Fish Deaths
Pune, April 10, 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has suspended two engineers from its Sewerage Maintenance and Repair Department following a serious environmental lapse that led to pollution in the Pashan Lake area.
According to official orders issued by the Municipal Commissioner’s Office, the action was taken after a site inspection on April 10 revealed that the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) in the Pashan Lake vicinity was non-operational. As a result, untreated sewage was directly discharged into the lake.
The discharge of untreated wastewater caused severe foul odor in the surrounding area and led to contamination of the lake water. Authorities also reported a large number of dead fish found floating in the lake, highlighting the gravity of the situation.
Terming the incident as “extremely serious,” the civic administration has initiated departmental inquiries under the provisions of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act, Section 56(2)(f). Both officials have been placed under immediate suspension pending investigation.
As per the suspension orders, the officials must strictly adhere to service conduct rules during the suspension period. The department has been directed to expedite the inquiry process. They will be entitled to subsistence allowance as per rules, and the suspension will be recorded in their service books. Additionally, they are not permitted to leave municipal limits without prior approval from the competent authority.
The incident has once again raised concerns over infrastructure maintenance and environmental monitoring in Pune, particularly around ecologically sensitive areas like Pashan Lake.
