Pune Collector Sets June 29 Deadline For Black Spot Audit To Curb Road Fatalities
Pune, June 16, 2026: In a bid to reduce the rising number of road accident deaths, Pune District Collector Jitendra Dudi has directed all concerned departments to conduct joint inspections of accident-prone “black spots” across the district and recommend both immediate and long-term corrective measures.
The directive was issued during a meeting of the District Road Safety Committee held at the Collector’s office. The meeting was attended by District Superintendent of Police Sandeep Gill, Public Works Department Superintending Engineer Bharatkumar Baviskar, Pune Traffic Police Deputy Commissioner Sandeep Bhajibhakare, Regional Transport Officer Sandesh Chavan, Assistant Deputy Regional Transport Officer Swapnil Bhosale, officials from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), and representatives of various social organizations.
Collector Dudi emphasized that preventing road accident fatalities in Pune city, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and rural areas must be treated as a priority. He instructed the Police Department, Regional Transport Office, NHAI, Public Works Department, MSRDC, and social organizations to jointly inspect identified black spots and carry out a detailed assessment of accident causes.
A comprehensive report containing findings and recommendations is to be submitted to the Collector’s office by June 29, 2026. The Collector warned that negligence in implementing the recommended safety measures would not be tolerated and that all departments would be held accountable for timely action.
Dudi also called for stricter enforcement against traffic rule violators to improve road discipline. Referring to the accident-prone Navale Bridge stretch, he directed NHAI to implement previously recommended safety measures and assured that funds would be made available for the required works.
Superintendent of Police Sandeep Gill said that reducing accidents remains a priority in line with Supreme Court directives. He suggested installing large awareness signboards near toll plazas on national highways to alert motorists and improve road safety.
Gill further informed that the Rural Police Department would soon submit a list of accident-prone locations across the district. Joint site inspections involving officials from all relevant departments will be organized thereafter to identify location-specific solutions.
Officials from the Transport Department, Public Works Department, Police Administration, and social organizations also presented various measures being undertaken to improve road safety and reduce accidents across Pune district.
