Pune, February 25, 2026: A formal complaint has been submitted to the Chief Engineer of the Electricity Department, Pune Municipal Corporation, highlighting the deteriorating condition and serious infrastructural issues at the Karve Nagar crematorium.

The complaint was addressed to Manisha Shekatkar, Chief Engineer, Electricity Department, Pune Municipal Corporation, after local resident and social activist Sandeep Khardekar, President of Creative Foundation, visited the crematorium for a funeral and witnessed what he described as “extremely pathetic and unsafe conditions.”

According to the complaint, extensive excavation work has made the approach road to the crematorium narrow, dangerous, and unsafe, creating serious difficulties for mourners. There is also no proper parking व्यवस्था (arrangement), causing further inconvenience. The problem has reportedly worsened due to slow-paced culvert construction work, and an urgent demand has been made for the immediate completion of all pending works.

The complaint also highlights the incomplete electric crematorium (electric furnace) project at the site. Materials related to the project are allegedly lying scattered across the premises, leading to unclean and unhygienic conditions. The letter questions whether the electric crematorium project will be completed at all and seeks clarity on the reasons behind the delay.

The complainant has demanded:

An immediate clarification on the status of the electric crematorium project

A clear timeline for completion of all pending works at the crematorium

Immediate action to improve safety, access roads, and parking facilities

In addition, the complaint calls for a city-wide initiative to develop electric cremation facilities across Pune in line with changing times and environmental protection goals. It also urges authorities to install public awareness boards encouraging citizens to opt for electric cremation as an eco-friendly alternative.
