Pune Crime: Two Cops Suspended for Extorting ₹20,000 from Youth Found Sitting in Car with Female Friend
Pune, June 22, 2025: In a case that has stirred public outrage, two police constables in Pune have been suspended for allegedly extorting ₹20,000 from a youth after finding him sitting in a parked car with his female friend. The incident has raised serious concerns about police misconduct and abuse of power during night patrols.
What Happened?
The incident took place on Tuesday night near Damle Path, Law College Road, Pune. A young man was sitting inside a car with his female friend when two patrolling police officers — Ganesh Desai and Yogesh Sutar — approached the vehicle. The officers claimed they had received a complaint against the couple and threatened to take them to the police station unless they paid ₹20,000 to “settle the matter.”
As the youth did not have the money at that moment, the constables allegedly took him on a two-wheeler to an ATM near Kamala Nehru Park, where he was forced to withdraw and hand over the amount.
Youth Reports Incident to Deccan Police
Frightened by the ordeal, the youth and his friend approached Deccan Police Station and reported the incident. A preliminary inquiry was launched, which confirmed the extortion by the two constables.
Police Deputy Commissioner of Zone 1, Nikhil Pingale, stated that the suspended officers failed to inform their superiors and acted in a manner that tarnished the image of the police force. As a result, both Ganesh Desai and Yogesh Sutar were placed under suspension. An internal investigation is underway.
This incident has caused unrest within the Pune Police Department and sparked debate on the misuse of authority by those entrusted with public safety.
In a Related Incident: Bribery Case in Beed District
In another shocking case of corruption, Rukmanand Khetre, the sarpanch of Kitty Adgaon village in Majalgaon taluka, Beed district, was caught red-handed by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) while accepting a bribe of ₹10,000.
Khetre had allegedly demanded ₹20,000 to approve a well construction proposal under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) in the name of the complainant’s mother. He was nabbed while accepting the first installment of the bribe.
Both cases highlight the urgent need for transparency and accountability in public service and law enforcement.
