Incident at Savitribai Phule Pune University raises serious concerns over campus safety and security gaps

A shocking incident at the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) campus has raised fresh concerns over the safety of students, especially those staying in hostels. An international student was allegedly harassed by a delivery agent who managed to enter the girls’ hostel premises.

According to police, the incident took place on Friday night when the accused, a delivery agent, reached the hostel and allegedly behaved in an obscene manner with the student. The situation escalated when the student raised an alarm, following which the accused fled the spot. He was later traced and arrested by police on Saturday.

The incident has triggered outrage among students and highlighted serious lapses in campus security, particularly regarding access control and monitoring of outsiders entering hostel premises.

The victim reportedly stated that the delivery agent had reached the third floor and was standing outside her room before misbehaving. She immediately alerted fellow hostel residents, after which the accused ran away. With the help of others, she later identified and helped in tracking him down.

Students have also raised concerns about the handling of the complaint. There are allegations that initial efforts were made to downplay or delay action, forcing the student to escalate the matter further before an FIR was registered.

Senior police officials confirmed that a case has been registered and the accused, believed to be around 25 years old, has been arrested under relevant sections. Authorities also stated that CCTV footage from the area is being examined as part of the investigation.

The incident has once again brought attention to long-standing concerns about safety on campus. Students have pointed out the lack of adequate CCTV coverage, insufficient security staff, and easy access for outsiders as major issues that need urgent attention.

In response, university authorities have announced immediate measures to strengthen security. These include deploying round-the-clock female security personnel, installing additional CCTV cameras, and introducing stricter entry controls such as grill gates at hostel premises.

Officials have also assured that students who feel unsafe will be shifted to alternative accommodation if required, and a committee has been formed to investigate the lapses and fix accountability.

The case has sparked a wider debate on student safety in university campuses, with demands for stricter protocols, better monitoring systems, and more responsive grievance mechanisms to ensure such incidents are prevented in the future.
