Pune: Dispute Erupts Over Demolition Of Legendary Writer G D Madgulkar’s Residence ‘Panchavati’
Pune, May 12, 2026: A controversy has surfaced over the proposed demolition of “Panchavati,” the historic Pune residence of renowned Marathi poet, lyricist, writer, and actor G. D. Madgulkar, where the iconic Geet Ramayan was reportedly composed.
The issue came to light after Sumitra Madgulkar, grandson of the celebrated literary figure, shared a social media post alleging that attempts are being made to demolish the Shivajinagar property despite opposition from family members who wish to preserve its cultural significance.
According to Sumitra Madgulkar, certain relatives and individuals connected to the property allegedly want to hand over the land to builders for redevelopment and financial gain. He stated that he and some family members are strongly opposing any move to demolish or sell the heritage structure, which holds immense literary and emotional value.
He further claimed that he has been receiving threats and that his family members are being harassed because of his stand against the proposed redevelopment.
Located in Pune’s Shivajinagar area, “Panchavati” is considered an important landmark in Marathi literature, as it was the residence where G. D. Madgulkar created the famous Geet Ramayan, a landmark work in Marathi cultural history.
In his social media statement, Sumitra Madgulkar said he is determined to protect the property and ensure that the historic residence is preserved in its original form rather than being demolished or sold for commercial development.
