In a decisive move effective this Monday, Pune District Collector Dr. Rajesh Deshmukh has taken a firm stance against illegal fishing activities around the Ujani Dam, particularly targeting unauthorized fishing of small fish and the breeding of prohibited Mangur fish in developed areas. The key measure underscores the mandatory necessity of obtaining a fishing license.

Prompted by reported instances of illegal fishing in Pune, Solapur, and Ahmednagar districts, Dr. Deshmukh convened a meeting that included representatives from Water Resources, Police, Revenue, Fisheries Department, Maharashtra Pollution Control Board, and local fishermen’s organizations.

The directives issued in response involve a prohibition on fishing small fish and breeding prohibited Mangur fish. Fishermen have been instructed to dismantle nets and materials used for illegal fishing, while Mangur fish farmers are required to eliminate their existing stocks, with farms in the Ujani Reservoir vicinity mandated for destruction.

Highlighting the mandatory need for a fishing license, Dr. Deshmukh urged local fishermen to obtain permits from the nearest Water Resources Department branch office.

Unlicensed fishermen entering the reservoir without permission will face legal consequences, as confirmed by the Executive Engineer of the Ujani Dam Management Department. This proactive move is aimed at protecting the Ujani Reservoir ecosystem and promoting responsible fishing practices.
