Pune, April 21:.
A district-level committee has been formed under the chairmanship of the Additional District Collector to take preventive action against milk adulteration, as per government directives. The committee includes the Additional Superintendent of Police (Pune), Assistant Commissioner (Food) from the Food and Drug Administration, Deputy Commissioner of Animal Husbandry (Pune), and Deputy Controller of Legal Metrology as members, with the District Dairy Development Officer acting as the member secretary.
The committee has issued an appeal urging citizens to report individuals or dairies involved in milk adulteration. Milk is a vital part of the daily diet and an important source of essential nutrients, contributing significantly to good health. However, adulteration with harmful substances poses a serious threat to consumer welfare. Common adulterants include water, cream, milk powder, vegetable oil, starch, urea, detergents, and other chemicals. Such adulteration not only compromises the nutritional value of milk but can also lead to serious health issues like digestive problems, allergies, and long-term organ damage.

To tackle this issue effectively, collaboration among consumers, government agencies, dairy industry stakeholders, and regulatory bodies is essential.
Sample testing will be conducted monthly at milk collection centres within Pune district, as well as those outside the district and from other states. Both cooperative and private sector dairy collection and processing centres will be monitored. The Food Safety Officers under the Assistant Commissioner (Food), FDA Pune Division, have been given monthly targets for sample collection. FIRs will be filed and strict criminal action will be taken against individuals or dairies found guilty of adulteration.
