Pune, 11 June 2025:
Tension gripped the Marketyard area on Wednesday morning after a tragic road accident claimed the life of a 25 year old woman biker. Another person driving the bike is injured seriously and is undergoing medical treatment at a nearby hospital. The truck driver has been detained by the police.

The accident occurred when a speeding truck, en route from Market Yard to Aai Mata Chowk, fatally hit a two-wheeler, killing the woman on the spot. The incident has reignited public anger over the unchecked movement of heavy vehicles during restricted hours and the lack of enforcement by traffic authorities.

Local residents, shocked by the fatal mishap, questioned why heavy vehicles continue to ply the Bibwewadi-Kondhwa stretch despite restrictions. “Why are rules not being followed? Why is no action taken until a life is lost?” voiced several angry citizens.

Atul Jain, an active resident from the area highlighted that continuous flow of heavy vehicles in the Marketyard often leads to such fatal accidents as these drivers drive vehicles recklessly. Our question to the Pune traffic police is that why are these vehicles allowed to ply during the prohibited time frame. How many more lives will be lost ? This is the third accident in the last three months ?

Another resident, Aniket Jagtap commented that for the past few years the vehicle flow on the road has increased multifold. There is no regulation of traffic by police. No action on these heavy vehicles is taken. We also demand thar police should ban heavy vehicles in daytime.

Recent Developments and Immediate Actions:

  • Temporary Ban on Heavy Vehicles:
In a swift response, Pune Traffic Police had imposed a temporary ban on heavy vehicles such as trucks, dumpers, and trailers along the Bibwewadi-Kondhwa Road leading to Gangadham Chowk earlier. The ban remains in force daily from 7 AM to 10 PM but no one follows it. Emergency and essential service vehicles are exempt from the restriction. Why is there no patrolling from the police ?
  • PMC Infrastructure Modifications:
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) had announced engineering interventions to address the steep gradient between Aai Mata Temple and Gangadham Chowk. Plans include reducing the slope gradient from 1:12 feet to 1:20 feet, installing speed bumps and rumble strips, and clearing encroachments to widen the road. Many of these things are yet to be implemented.
  • Community and Political Mobilization:
In the aftermath of the accident, local residents had earlier staged a ‘rasta roko’ protest, demanding immediate and long-term traffic safety measures.
  • Ongoing Concerns and Skepticism:

Despite the recent flurry of action, residents remain skeptical about the longevity and effectiveness of these measures. Many fear that once media and administrative focus fades, enforcement will again weaken, allowing dangerous traffic practices to resume.

The fatal accident at Gangadham Chowk has underscored a larger problem: the need for sustained commitment to traffic regulation, robust infrastructure planning, and a proactive approach to public safety by all concerned authorities.
