Pune, May 22, 2026: Concerns over fire safety preparedness in Pune’s residential housing societies have once again come under the spotlight after the Pune Fire Brigade issued a formal notice to Bramha Estate Co-operative Housing Society in Kondhwa Budruk for major fire safety lapses.

The action follows a recent fire incident reported in the society’s electricity meter box area on May 18, 2026. According to the letter issued by the Chief Fire Officer’s office of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), the fire was allegedly caused due to a short circuit and was later controlled by the fire brigade team.

However, during the inspection, officials reportedly found several violations of mandatory fire safety norms. The electricity meter room was allegedly cluttered with obstructions, making emergency access difficult during the incident. Fire officials also observed that the society lacked essential safety equipment such as fire extinguishers and sand buckets, which are mandatory under prescribed fire safety regulations.

Authorities stated that many housing societies continue to neglect basic fire prevention measures, including keeping meter rooms free from encroachments, maintaining clear fire exits, and ensuring availability of emergency firefighting equipment.

The PMC Fire Department has directed the society management to immediately undertake necessary fire prevention and protection measures in accordance with the Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Safety Measures Act, 2006. The notice also instructed the society to ensure regular maintenance and operational readiness of all firefighting systems, along with mandatory fire audits every six months through authorised agencies.

In addition, officials advised that repairs related to the electrical meter box should be carried out only through government-approved licensed contractors. The department also emphasised the need to keep all emergency exits and access routes completely obstruction-free to avoid complications during emergencies.

The incident has triggered renewed concerns regarding fire safety compliance in densely populated residential societies across Pune.
