Pune: Former Mayor and Senior NCP Leader Shantilal Suratwala Passes Away At 76
Pune, January 30, 2026: The Pawar family, along with leaders and workers of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), is still reeling from the shock of the demise of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. Amid this atmosphere of grief, another tragic loss has struck the party in Pune. Former Pune mayor and senior NCP leader Shantilal Suratwala passed away in the early hours of Friday.
Suratwala breathed his last at the age of 76. He had been battling cancer for some time and was undergoing treatment at Ruby Hall Clinic in Pune, where he succumbed to the illness.
Shantilal Suratwala served as the Mayor of Pune between 1992 and 1993. He was regarded as a close and trusted associate of senior leader Sharad Pawar. During his time in the Congress, he led the Sharad Pawar faction in Pune and was known for his unwavering loyalty, often stating that he would never abandon Pawar Saheb under any circumstances.
After Sharad Pawar founded the Nationalist Congress Party, Suratwala continued to work alongside him and later served as the city president of the NCP. Due to declining health, he had remained largely inactive in politics in recent times.
His demise marks another significant loss for the NCP and the city of Pune, with party leaders and workers expressing deep sorrow over the passing of a veteran leader.
