Pune: Former Miss India Earth Participant Sayali Surve Re-enters Hindu Faith After Marriage Dispute
Pune, March 9, 2026: Sayali Surve, a participant in the 2019 Miss India Earth pageant from Pimpri-Chinchwad, has returned to the Hindu faith after undergoing a religious purification ceremony, drawing public attention and sparking debate around interfaith marriage and religious conversion.
According to those present at the event, the ceremony was conducted in the presence of members of Hindutva organisations and included rituals such as homa, havan and Vedic chants. Following the ceremony, Surve’s name was officially changed. After her marriage she had been known as Ateja Tase, but she has now been renamed Adya Surve.
Surve had married businessman Atif Tase from Mira Bhayandar in 2019 in a love marriage despite opposition from her family. After the marriage, she claims she faced continuous mental and physical harassment and was pressured into religious conversion.
She said she had approached the police several times with complaints but did not receive the response she expected. According to Surve, prolonged harassment left her distressed, and after several attempts she eventually contacted Hindutva organisations that helped facilitate her return to the Hindu faith through the purification ritual.
Speaking about her experience, Surve said she endured difficulties in her marriage for nearly a decade largely for the sake of her four children. She explained that she wanted her children to grow up with the love of both parents and therefore tried to continue the relationship despite the challenges.
However, she said there came a point when she could no longer tolerate the situation and decided to leave. Surve added that people should remain connected to the values and beliefs they grow up with and make the right decisions during difficult times.
The incident has once again triggered discussions around religious conversion, interfaith marriages and marital disputes. The matter has drawn attention from social and political circles, with many closely watching how the situation develops further.
