Pune: Friend Accidentally Shoots Another While Handling Illegal Pistol On Kondhwa Gangadham Road; One Arrested For Illegal Possession
Pune, January 20, 2025: A shocking incident occurred on Saturday night on the Kondhwa-Gangadham road when a young man was injured after his friend accidentally fired a shot from an illegally possessed pistol. The injured man tried to mislead the police, fearing the incident would become more complicated. However, the police conducted a thorough investigation and arrested one individual for possessing the illegal firearm.
The arrested person, Anil Chavan, was found in possession of an unlicensed, locally made pistol. The injured, Pradeep Sawant (31), is a friend of Chavan, and both are involved in land buying and selling. Around 11:30 PM on Saturday, the two men were at an open area on the Kondhwa-Gangadham road, drinking alcohol when Chavan showed Sawant the pistol he had brought. While handling the firearm, Chavan accidentally fired the gun, and the bullet went through Sawant’s thigh.
To cover up the incident, Chavan dropped the injured Sawant at the SwamiNarayan temple area in Narhe. Sawant later went to a private hospital in Dattanagar. When doctors became suspicious, they advised him to go to a larger hospital. Eventually, Sawant arrived at a hospital in Narhe, where the medical staff reported the case to the Ambegaon police. Sawant then falsely claimed that an unknown assailant shot him near the temple.
The police quickly began their investigation. After reviewing CCTV footage from the area, it was found that no gunshot-like noise was recorded, leading them to interrogate Sawant. He eventually admitted that his friend had accidentally fired the pistol. Chavan was arrested by Kondhwa police for illegal possession of a firearm, and Senior Police Inspector Vinay Patankar is overseeing the investigation.
