The target for Pune district administration for this year’s Lok Sabha elections is to maximise voter counts in areas such as Shivajinagar, Kothrud, Vadgaon Sheri, Pune Cantonment, Parvati and Kasba. This is because voter turnout in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections was around 49.84%, which was lower as compared to other constituencies; therefore this time, the Pune election district has decided to lay special emphasis on these constituencies in order to maximise the vote bank.

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and the Pune Metro have been jointly working on targeting these areas in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Students who have registered to vote for the first time are being given special focus as NGOs and government agencies have been visiting the colleges for the purpose of encouraging students to vote.

A significant number of new voters has been added to the list this year, especially in constituencies which have experienced a low voter count in the past years. The main focus is on people who fall in the age category of 20 to 29 years. Efforts are being put by the Pune government to encourage women slum-dwellers to cast a vote through various self-help groups and NGOs who are willing to extend their support. Industry workers are receiving education and counselling on how to vote and why it is important to cast a vote during elections.

Door-to-door visits are being conducted to educate and encourage people in these areas to register and cast a vote in the 2024 elections. People who work in Anganwadi centres, brick kilns and fields have been advised to vote as well. The government has put up posters and banners and conducted rallies to spread awareness about elections and the importance of voting. The current campaign which is being conducted is, “Tai, akka, vahini, mavshi go to vote”.

The Pune Metro is also taking initiatives from their end to raise awareness among commuters by putting up posters at all their stations as a constant reminder for people to vote.
