The prevalence of alcohol and tobacco, along with societal influences like material possessions and influence from peers, is playing a role in the notable rise of addiction among adolescents and students in Pune. Studies indicate that as many as 15 percent of young individuals are presently engaged in alcohol and cigarette use, causing a diversion from their focus on education and professional growth.

The escalation of addiction among teenagers is attributed to parties held in affluent neighborhoods and the distribution of alcohol during social events. The allure of status symbols, evolving lifestyles, and peer influence are leading adolescents towards detrimental behaviours. Experts in counselling and psychology stress that hormonal fluctuations, inquisitiveness, and peer pressure are typical factors contributing to addiction in young adults.

Furthermore, inadequate communication and family dynamics can exacerbate these problems. Dr. Shruti Panse, an education researcher, emphasizes the importance of counseling and communication, encouraging parents to stay informed about their children’s social circles and participate in both individual and group therapy sessions.

In order to maintain mental health, professionals recommend participating in hobbies such as reading, writing, sports, or meditation. They emphasize the significance of dedicating quality time to family and fostering positive activities to reduce stress and enhance mental well-being in the current demanding society.
